The influence of oral health literacy ability on oral health knowledge

Abstract
Objectives: This research was carried out to analyze the effect that oral health literacy of adults has on oral health knowledge and to find out interrogate their relevance.

Methods: A self-administered questionnaire survey was carried out performed with 554 adults who had visited dental institutions, that are located in Daegu area. For adults who are aged 60 years old or older, direct interviews were carried out. The statistical analysis was performed with t-test, ANOVA and a multiple regression using the SAS 9.4.

Results: As a result, the oral health knowledge scores by sex, age, and education level showed statistically significant difference among the total 554 subjects(p=.003, .001, .008). When comparing oral health knowledge scores by three groups, the lower the literacy ability, the lower was the oral health knowledge score (p<.001). The results of multiple regression standardized estimate value was .365, numeracy was .082, and adjusted R2 was .205

Conclusion: Among regarding the comprehension of oral health, we found that literacy ability was the most relevant to oral health knowledge.
